Panda-rrific Word Work!

TRASH TALK
Common Core State Standards-RF.K.1., RF.K.2., L.K.2.
I borrowed this idea from a Four Blocks presentation I saw and then put my own spin to it. I link this to Recycling by using "trash" that can be recycled such as plastic bottles, boxes ETC. I use a word on the packaging and the students make words that have the same pattern of letters. Now this is more than just word families or rhyming words. This is using the same pattern of letters starting with the vowel and all the letters that follow should be the same. Lets use Kashi GO LEAN Cereal for example and we will use the word Lean. We will underline the e and all letters following it- lean.  Ask the children (or do it yourself) to change the "l" to another letter for instance "b" and you have "bean" continue with as many words as they can come up with. They will come up with words that are not in the same pattern such as "seen". This is a good time to explain the difference between word patterns and words that just rhyme. Place a line through or X out the words that are not Word Patterns. Here is what it would look like on a Smart Board or Chart paper
